Winter Weather and Your Fence

Published by Webmaster

When you choose to live in Chicago, harsh winter weather becomes a fact of life. The snow and cold make your life more difficult and can also affect your fence. Depending on the type of fence that you own and the winter conditions, there are different steps that you must take to prepare your fence for winter. As your fence company in Wilmette, Top Line Fence is ready to help you with these preparations.

Wood Fence

Wood fences are known to have the most maintenance and that doesn’t change when it comes to preparing for winter weather. Make sure to check your fence for softwood and use wood putty to patch any small holes or cracks. Winter creates moisture, which then can lead to mold and mildew for your wood fence. To help prevent this, gently clean snow and ice buildup off of your fence regularly.

Vinyl Fence

The biggest threat to your vinyl fence in the winter is ice and snow. Make sure to keep snow away from your fence and to shovel snow towards the middle of your yard so it doesn’t pile up along your fence. As long as you keep ice and snow from building up, your fence should be fine.

Wrought Iron Fence

Just like a vinyl fence, wrought iron fences don’t have issues with rot or insect damage. Just be sure to keep snow and ice from piling up because they can be damaged by the weight of the snow.
