How to Keep Your Wood Fence Looking New

Published by Webmaster

Given the harsh winters, rainy springs, and hot summers the Windy City endures each year, taking good care of your wood fence in Chicago is somewhat of a challenge. Our fencing experts have a few suggestions to prolong the life of your wood fence and keep it looking as good as new.

Pre-Treat the Wood

If the wooden panels on your fence have not been pre-treated, they are vulnerable to rotting and drying. Water from rain and sprinklers will speed the rotting process, and the drying and splitting of the wood will happen naturally over time. Give your wood fence a little TLC and apply a quality, water-repelling acrylic or oil-based stain for prolonged durability.

Watch Out for Vines and Foliage

Plants, shrubs, or vines that are allowed to grow up or near the fence can also be detrimental to the wood. The moisture from the plants and lack of adequate sunlight can accelerate rotting in untreated or poorly treated wood. Plant your garden far enough away from the panels to allow air flow and sunlight. Your plants and your fence will thank you!

Pressure Washing

Often times algae will find its way on to your wood fence. While totally natural, it will affect the panels. The most effective and simplest way to remove algae is by pressure washing, which will remove the growth and leave your wood looking new. Don’t forget to reapply a coat of water-repellant sealant to the fence as soon as the panels have completely dried.

A wood fence in Chicago is a timeless, functional option to give your house curb appeal and your yard purpose. By installing a quality Top Line Fence from the start, and keeping up with our standard maintenance tips, your wood fence in Chicago will be the talk of your neighborhood.
